There is no medical test, like a blood test, to diagnose the disorders. The diagnosis of autism is based on judgment regarding observations of the individual’s behavior. Information from family members and other observers are very important in making the decision. Autism screening and diagnosis involves interviews, observation and evaluations. Autism is a disorder that is usually first diagnosed in early childhood. Therapists look at the child’s behavior and development to make a diagnosis.

Autistic children and adults exhibit many forms of repetitive or restricted behavior such as hand flapping, making sounds, head rolling, body rocking, arranging objects in stacks or lines, tantrums, biting, kicking, and throwing themselves. They display all these behavior irrespective of place and situation. Often it is not possible to carry materials to record the behavior. Time has come now to stop using behavior charts, spreadsheets, pen and paper.
